The Fantasticast Episode 13: Fantastic Four #15 & Strange Tales #109

The Fantasticast Episode 13

The Thinker's Fantastical Predictions

Hello and welcome to a very special episode of The Fantasticast! Not only are we celebrating half a year's worth of the show (we're aiming for 26 a year), but we're also celebrating the birthdays of both Andrew and Stephen, born only 24 hours (and a handful of years) apart. Not that we realised this when recording the show, but I thought I'd put some metaphorical balloons up anyway!

So, this time around, we get to grip with The Mad Thinker and his Awesome Android in Fantastic Four #15. Steve's been going on for weeks how much he dislikes the Thinker, so the contents of this episode may just surprise you. And then it's over to Strange Tales #109 for the threat of the Sorceror and the contents of Pandora's Box. And with a villain called the Sorceror, you just know we've gone overboard with the Hitch-Hiker's Guide To The Galaxy music...

The Fantasticast Episode 12

HYPNOFISH!!!

Twelve episodes into the Fantasticast and Andrew and Stephen find themselves confronted by the titanic not-quite-a-team-up of Namor and Puppet Master, followed by the worst forger (and moustache) in the world, The Painter. Discover the joys of the Hypnofish, marvel at Alicia Masters' uncanny ability to resolve the plot in time for the end of the book, and cower before the menace of Wilhelm van Vile.

The Fantasticast Episode 11: Fantastic Four #13 & Strange Tales #107

The Fantasticast Episode 11

Red? Yes! Communist? Yes! Russian? No!

Just to be clear, Ivan Kragoff, the Red Ghost, is not Russian at all. Oh no.

Welcome to the 11th episode of the Mighty Fantasticast. This week, your hosts - Andrew Leyland and Steve Lacey - take a deep breath and dive into one of Stan and Jack's kookier concepts, the Red Ghost and his super-apes. It's not all crazy super-simians though, as we encounter a mysterious being who embodies the concept of non-interference (unless it suits the writer to have him interfere), The Watcher. It's Fantastic Four #13 in all its glory!

We then come back down to Earth and journey beneath the seas as we join Johnny Storm as he seeks out Namor the Sub-Mariner to exact vengeance for something or other, possibly boredom.

We also spend a few minutes catching up with your emails and feedback. Keep them coming in and we'll feature each and every one in an upcoming episode.

The Fantasticast Episode 10: Fantastic Four #12, Strange Tales #106 & Amazing Spider-Man #1

The Fantasticast Episode 10

Hulk? Smash!

Hurrah, it's another Weter-iffic episode of the Fantasticast! But why is it Weter-iffic? Well, dear listner, it is Weter-iffic due to the presence of our latest guest-host. You may have heard him on Superman Forever Radio, Green Lantern's Light, The New 52 Adventures of Superman, or PADSMASH: An Incredible Hulk Podcast. He is J. David Weter, and he joins us for the seminal Fantastic Four #12, featuring ol' jade-jaws himself, The Incredible Hulk.

Following this, we stop off in Strange Tales #106 as the Acrobat causes mischief, mayhem, and the abandonment of something very important to the nascent Johnny Storm. And finally, we celebrate the publication of the iconic Amazing Spider-Man #1 by taking a look at the team's first ever appearance outside of one of their own titles.

The Fantasticast Episode 9

Patriotic Pedestrians Proceeding from Planet Poppup Prefer Poorly Produced Podcasts

I don't consider our show poorly produced, but we have been experiencing sound quality issues that do affect this episode. Sorry!

This week Steve and Andy are on their own, and they're taking a look at two slices of Silver age scrumptiousness. First up is Fantastic Four #11, featuring the first appearances of Willie Lumpkin and The Impossible Man. And then, to finish off, there's Strange Tales #106, featuring the second appearance of most of the Wizard.

The Fantasticast Episode 8: Fantastic Four #10 & Strange Tales #104

Don! Don! Don! Don-Don-Don! Don-Don-Don!

(It's the Imperial March)

Welcome to Episode Eight of the Fantasticast! I can't believe we've been doing this for more hours than there are of television and film set in the world of Firefly! This episode sees veteran podcaster Donovan Morgan Grant (Amazing Spider-Man Classics, The Next Dimension: A Dragonball Z Podcast) jump aboard for two hours of mind-swapping madness and sticky goodness as we take a look at Fantastic Four #10 and Strange Tales #104. We find out how Doctor Doom survive the ravages of space, watch the team read some mail, and meet Paste Pot Pete and give him every ounce of respect that his first appearance deserves.

The Fantasticast Episode 7: Fantastic Four #9 & Strange Tales #103

The Fantasticast Episode 7

S(&)M Studios!

Stephen and Andrew are (mostly) going it alone this week, taking a look at Fantastic Four #9, which gave us the first appearance of the classic Silver Age Marvel trope, the use of a film shoot to cover the plans of a nefarious ne'er-do-well! There's fun galore as the signal flare is used and abused, as Stan and Jack cram in a bunch of celebrity cameos, as the Human Torch faces off against a fire-proof tribe, and Ben and Namor get down to business in one of the best fight scenes yet in the book. And then there's Strange Tales #103, which has some mucking around in the 5th dimension (not that one...) in a fairly forgettable story that has already slipped my memory.

We're also briefly joined by Jon M. Wilson and J. David Weter of The New 52 Adventures of Superman to establish just what the heck went on with the last episode...

The Fantasticast Episode 6: Fantastic Four #8 & Strange Tales #102

The Fantasticast Episode 6

Like A Puppet On A String

This week, Andrew and Steve are joined by veteran podcaster Joshua Lapin-Bertone, formerly of Amazing Spider-Man Classics and currently of Clone Saga Chronicles, The Spider-Man Crawlspace and Bertone Beatle Bonanza, amongst others. Josh is a veteran of the Silver Age, despite not having lived through it, and was also the voice for Namor in our amazing trailer, so we couldn't wait to get him onto the show.

This time, we cover the first appearance of Philip and Alicia Masters in Fantastic Four #8, whilst the Wizard and his alarming choice of facial hair pop up to render a future retcon null and void in Strange Tales #102.

The Fantasticast Episode 5: Fantastic Four #7 & Strange Tales #101

The Fantasticast Episode 5

The Strangest Tales Of All

Hello and welcome to the fifth episode of the Fantasticast. Andrew Leyland and Steve Lacey are your guides today as we journey through Fantastic Four #7 and Strange Tales #101, the first issue of that title to feature the (almost) solo adventures of The Human Torch. Along the way, we nearly redo a gag from a previous episode, get highly distracted by anything shiny nearby, and, almost by accident, manage to provide some commentary on the issues!

The Fantasticast Episode 4: Fantastic Four #6 - Captives Of The Deadly Duo

The Fantasticast Episode 4

Super-Villain Team Up

Welcome to the fourth episode of the Fantasticast. Each week, Steve Lacey (20 Minute Longbox) and Andrew Leyland (Heykids Comics) team up every two weeks to examine the Fantastic Four from the very beginning. This week we take some time out from the series to take a look at the feedback sent in by our listeners, before spending some time with Fantastic Four #6, featuring the first team up of Namor and Doctor Doom!

The Fantasticast Episode 3: Fantastic Four #4 & #5

The Fantasticast Episode 3

Super-Villain Cavalcade

Welcome to the third episode of The Fantasticast, the fortnightly show where Steve Lacey and Andrew Leyland take a look at every issue of the Fantastic Four from the very beginning. This time out, we take a look at Fantastic Four #4 and #5, featuring the first appearances of two of the greatest antagonists for the team: Namor, the Sub-Mariner, and Doctor Doom.

Oh, and we reveal the truth about the hosts: Our well-crafted outer appearance of mature and responsible adults completely crumbles when faced with a story in which Namor's mighty horn features prominently.

Fnarr...

The Fantasticast Episode 2: Fantastic Four #2 and #3

The Fantasticast Episode 2

Secret Invasion Tie-In

No, really. Fantastic Four #2 was included in the Secret Invasion: The Infiltration trade paperback. So it counts.

Hello, and welcome to the special edition of episode 2 of The Fantasticast. Each week, Steve Lacey and Andy Leyland guide you through every issue, guest-appearance and cameo of The Fantastic Four.

This week, we're taking the tentative second steps on our journey through the lives and times of The Fantastic Four by taking a look at the second and third issues of the comic. In Fantastic Four #2, Stan Lee and Jack Kirby start flexing their cosmic muscles, introducing one of the mainstay alien races of the Marvel Universe, the Skrulls. In Fantastic Four #3, we get The Miracle Man. Well, not every one can be a winner...

We also take the time to reveal of your (and our) favourite podcasters lent their voices to our original trailer. And then, once all the original fun is done, Steve takes a few minutes to reflect on the second episode, the successes and the regrettable mistakes. Oh, and if you've been wondering where the outtakes from this episode were? They've been found. Finally, you can find out why Andy was laughing a little bit at one point. It's good when a mystery gets solved...

The Fantasticast Episode 1: Introductions, Origins, and Fantastic Four #1

The Fantasticast Episode 1

And So It Begins...

Hello, and welcome to episode 1 of The Fantasticast. Each week, Steve Lacey and Andy Leyland guide you through every issue, guest-appearance and cameo of The Fantastic Four.

This is our special edition of our first episode. The audio is a bit cleaner, we've found some outtakes, there's a special Producer's Commentary, and Andy now shoots first. We hope you enjoy this episode but, as the commentary points out, the show has come a long way since this first recording. We have a much stronger format, much better quality audio, and we sound much more convincing when we're pretending that we're any kind of authority on the subject matter.

To kick off the Fantasticast, we spend this episode introducing ourselves and answering the important question of why we would want to podcast about the Fantastic Four, before taking a look at the origins of the Marvel Age of Comics, then finally covering Fantastic Four #1.

It's the first step on a road that covers the entire Lee/Kirby era, the Human Torch's adventures in Strange Tales, Marvel Two-In-One, and more. Welcome to The Fantasticast - we hope you survive the X-Men reference!
