The Fantasticast Episode 181: Marvel Team-Up #23 - The Night Of The Frozen Inferno

The Fantasticast Episode 181

A Team-Up Of Ice And Fire

Hello, and welcome to episode 181 of The Fantasticast. Each week, Steve Lacey and Andy Leyland guide you through every issue, guest-appearance and cameo of The Fantastic Four.

A titanic team-up as the tremendous twosome throw in together to tussle with the terrifying top dog of temperature, Equinox the Thermonuclear Man! Which tremendous twosome, we hear you ask? Why, the Human Torch and Iceman, who take over Marvel Team-Up for an issue. And just for fun, we also cover two pages of Giant-Size Spider-Man #1, in which Spidey borrows a ride and doesn't mention an ice patch.

Presented as only Len Wein, Gil Kane and Mike Esposito could possibly to present! Featuring lots of punching, and some surprising artistic references to the 1990s, but two decades too early. All this, plus Steve has finally combined his Hamilton obsession with his podcasting obsession. You have been warned...

The Fantasticast Episode 176: Fantastic Four #146 - Doomsday: 200 Degrees Below

The Fantasticast Episode 176

Junior Comics Podcaster Deathmatch

Hello, and welcome to episode 176 of The Fantasticast. Each week, Steve Lacey and Andy Leyland guide you through every issue, guest-appearance and cameo of The Fantastic Four.

Today, we're discovering just how cold it is in the hidden lands inhabited by a scientifically-advanced race of Bigfeets located just 50km away from the Great Refuge. Yes, we're covering Fantastic Four #146, by Gerry Conway, Joe Sinnott and guest-penciler Ross Andru. Given the cover, you have to wonder why they made such a fuss about concealing the arrival of the Thing in the story. And we do wonder.

To help us cover this issue, we're joined by podcaster Paul Spataro, co-host of Back To The Bins and Listen To The Prophets: A Star Trek Deep Space Nine Podcast. He's here to shame Steve by speaking with a true New York accent, and by revealing his actual first issue of the Fantastic Four. Spoilers: It's not this one.

The Fantasticast Episode 175: Fantastic Four #145 - Nightmare In The Snow

The Fantasticast Episode 175

There Is No Cannon

Hello, and welcome to episode 175 of The Fantasticast. Each week, Steve Lacey and Andy Leyland guide you through every issue, guest-appearance and cameo of The Fantastic Four.

This week sees the Fantasticast team reunited and looking at Fantastic Four #145, by Gerry Conway, Joe Sinnott and guest artist Ross Andru. Medusa and Johnny are stuck in the Himalayas, under attack from a race of advanced yeti-folk, struggling under the weight of too many flashbacks, and facing off against a formidable ice-cannon, which doesn't exist.

We're also getting our own schedule wrong, pondering the plural form of Bigfoot (Bigfeet?), experiencing THE SCIENCE, referencing Les Dennis, roping an unwilling guest star into joining the show, and wondering just what would have happened if George Constanza had joined the Marvel Bullpen.

The Fantasticast Episode 167: Fantastic Four #141 - The End Of The Fantastic Four

The Fantasticast Episode 167

Annihilus Hamilton

Hello, and welcome to episode 167 of The Fantasticast. Each week, Steve Lacey and Andy Leyland guide you through every issue, guest-appearance and cameo of The Fantastic Four.

It's a huge week for the Fantastic Four, as the Annihilus story comes to a conclusion with Reed forced to make an impossible decision in Fantastic Four #141. We've also got a look at at an undressed Spider-Mobile in Amazing Spider-Man #127, and a quick look at the effects of the Avengers-Defenders War in The Avengers #118. With contributions from Gerry Conway, Steve Englehart, a departing John Buscema, Ross Andru, Bob Brown, and more, this is a packed episode.

So packed, in fact, that we barely found time to abuse our e-mailers. Or to counter Gerry Conway's Wyatt Wingfoot-blinness. Or to experience compromised cryptography. And we definitely didn't forget - and then remember again - Janus the Nega-Man. Or Spider-Man. Ah well...

Meanwhile, Steve's at the London Super Comic Convention, and would love to say hello to any listeners there. Grab him on twitter or flag him down and say hi. He promises not to bite. Or to get all nervous and flustered either...

The Fantasticast Episode 165: Fantastic Four #140 - Annihilus Revealed

The Fantasticast Episode 165

Namor's Onesie

Hello, and welcome to episode 165 of The Fantasticast. Each week, Steve Lacey and Andy Leyland guide you through every issue, guest-appearance and cameo of The Fantastic Four.

It's a triple-comic week on the Fantasticast. First up, the main event, Fantastic Four #140, which pulls together just about every unresolved plot line since Jack Kirby left the book. Where did Agatha Harkness go? What's going on with Franklin's glowing eyes? Will Sue and Reed ever reunite? Thanks to the return of our favourite buck-toothed, armour-clad insectoid ruler of the Negative Zone, a sense of purpose and direction returns to the book.  And, as if all of this wasn't enough, we also find out the  origins of Annihilus.

Elsewhere, we're also taking a look at the beginnings of one of the most superfluous mandated pieces of superhero technology, the Spider-Mobile, in Amazing Spider-Man #126. We then follow up with some big changes for Namor in Sub-Mariner #67, where a heavy dose of nerve-gas leads to the introduction of a brand new costume.

The Fantasticast Episode 154: Fantastic Four #131 - Revolt In Paradise

The Fantasticast Episode 154

Flamenco Exposition

Hello, and welcome to episode 154 of The Fantasticast. Each week, Steve Lacey and Andy Leyland guide you through every issue, guest-appearance and cameo of The Fantastic Four.

This week, we're covering the first part of Roy Thomas's final Fantastic Four story for a few years. John Buscema's taking a holiday, so Ross Andru swings by to provide fill-in art for this story featuring Johnny Storm, Crystal and Quicksilver in the Great Refuge. The Alpha Primitives are revolting... and they're not too happy about their status as slaves either!

It's an episode packed full of romance, fill-in art, the intentional immorality of Benjamin J. Grimm, existential links, discovering that Crystal doesn't know how to kiss, and the revelation that Black Bolt is The Karate Kid.

The Fantasticast Episode 146: Marvel Team-Up #3 - The Power To Purge

The-Fantasticast-Episode-146

The Waffles Are An Untruth

Hello, and welcome to episode 146 of The Fantasticast. Each week, Steve Lacey and Andy Leyland guide you through every issue, guest-appearance and cameo of The Fantastic Four.

This week sees us dip our toes back into the murky waters of Marvel Team-Up, as the Human Torch once again teams up with Spider-Man, this time to take on the Living Vampire himself, Morbius.

Joining us for this team-up is UK Podcast Award nominee Stacey Taylor, of Stacey's Pop Culture Parlour and Podcast In A Half-Shell. Together, we name Timothy Spall as the quintessential brummie, out-index the Marvel Index, indulge in some over-ACT-ing, encounter a muffled Spider-Man, get drunk on cheese, and ponder just what exactly an enzyme vampire actually is.

You can find Stacey's Pop Culture Parlour here, and the Podcast In A Half-Shell hereStacey's 24 Hour Podcast begins here. You can also find the Parlour on twitter here, and Stacey's personal twitter is here.

The Fantasticast Episode 143: Marvel Team-Up #2 - And Spidey Makes Four

The Fantasticast Episode 143

Peter Parker's Chin's Secret Identity

Hello, and welcome to episode 143 of The Fantasticast. Each week, Steve Lacey and Andy Leyland guide you through every issue, guest-appearance and cameo of The Fantastic Four.

It's time for another team-up, in more ways than one. We're covering Marvel Team-Up #2: The Frightful Four are back, with a surprising new addition to the team, and only the Human Torch can stop them. Aided and abetted by Spider-Man, it's the teenage heroes of the Marvel Universe against the Fantastic Four's greatest villains, as well as an unexpected threat from the Negative Zone. All this comics goodness if brought to you by Gerry Conway, Ross Andru and Jim Mooney.

Teaming up with us to tackle this titanic tussle is writer and podcaster James Hunt. James is a regular feature writer at Den of Geek, co-writer of A Brief History Of Time Travel, and part of the panel at the excellent Cinematic Universe podcast. He can be found on twitter as @jameshunt.

Together, all three hosts find themselves carbon-dating Marvel fashions, discovering the Human Torch in polyester, subjecting someone to unexpected and violent disrobing, and musing the possibilities of Garfield Minus Garfield, Plus Lying Cat...

The Fantasticast Episode 140: Marvel Team-Up #1 - Have Yourself A Sandman Little Christmas

The Fantasticast Episode 140

A Very Sandman History

Hello, and welcome to episode 140 of The Fantasticast. Each week, Steve Lacey and Andy Leyland guide you through every issue, guest-appearance and cameo of The Fantastic Four.

This week, we're branching away from The Fantastic Four to cover the first issue of the iconic team up book from Marvel, Marvel Team-Up. The Human Torch and Spider-Man teaming up to stop the Sandman from... er... anyway. Roy Thomas and Ross Andru team up to bring you this titanic team up.

And they're not the only ones! To celebrate the launch of this title, we've teamed up with Avengers Inspirations and New 52 Adventures of Superman host (and past guest host for The Fantasticast) Jon M. Wilson. Together, we discuss bungalows, explore continuity and nitpicks, index the official indexes, and uncover the secret history of Misty Knight.

The Fantasticast Episode 127: Fantastic Four #111 - The Thing -- Amok!

The Fantasticast Episode 127

She Hid The Gun Where?

Hello, and welcome to episode 127 of The Fantasticast. Each week, Steve Lacey and Andy Leyland guide you through every issue, guest-appearance and cameo of The Fantastic Four.

This week, it's a bumper crop of comics for Steve and Andy to cast their Fantastic-eye over. The main feature is Fantastic Four #111, with a rampaging mad Ben Grimm tearing up a suprisingly small New York.

We're also taking a look at the origins of the Kree-Skrull War with Avengers #89, and taking a brief peak at the erotic fantasies of Namor in Sub-Mariner #38. And, because I'm late heading out to the pub, that's where this episode's notes are going to end.
